Understand the actual data transfer rate of PTCL EVO

Its 5th day I am using PTCL EVO. Well I have used wired DSL before switching to it. And they are far better than it. But for this you just pay for mobility. Another thing that people got confuse the units used with its data transfer rate. PTCL claims that it can go maximum of 3.1Mbps. Remember its MEGA BITS per second. Not MEGA BYTE per second. Which people usually confuse it.

Its a 3.1Mbps link. Not 3.1MB/sec. So if you some binary math so you came to know...

3.1 Mbps = 3174 Kbps (3.1*1024) = 396 KB/sec (3174/8)

so the maximum speed you can get on this link is 396 KB/sec.

According to their website:

Average download speeds from 300 kbps to 500 kbps!

Which becomes 37.5 KB/sec to 62 KB/sec. If you remeber your dial up days. That gave 56Kbps which become 6 KB/sec. So you can see what you are getting after paying 2000 per month.

I have experienced 70KB/sec average on wired DSL. But with 80% of signal strength I am getting 10KB/sec on EVO. I have used it at Ichra and near Qaddafi Stadium, Lahore. Its pathetic.

I have also noticed an issue related to device that it hangs my system, some time. It was only working with one USB port. Though I have rest three too. Where its drivers also installed. But if I try to use it on other ports. EVO software gave me the messge that device is not connected. Any how I reinstalling drivers resolve this issue.

If you have also used it or have used some other wireless service, you should tell me about your experience. Please feel free to drop your comments below.

Chips Fiesta. When you have nothing to eat except potatoes :)

Its late night. Every one is sleeping. Kitchen is ours. Lets see what we have to eat...nothing. Look around. O yes there is a pile of potatoes. Lets peal them out beautifully and gracefully to minimum hurt them. Love potato chips and live long. :) One last thing if you end up your feast with a glass of chilled coke. You will definitely enjoy healthy burping ;)

Eid ul Azha - whats in my mind :)

Yes. Today is Eid. The day will start InshAllah by offering Eid Prayer. I got my new Kurta from tailor. Thank God he finished with it. So being a derwaish type of boy I am very happy with it :). I have a lot of other exciting stuff too. The process of slaughtering the goat and making the meat will be the most busiest work for the day. Lets see if I invited in this process. Otherwise I will be on the way to visit my friends. I will be waiting for my friend to visit me so that we can see all of our friends and can greet them Eid.

And having the Bar B Q will be the real fun at evening. I am speculating that it would be great in taste. InshAllah. I don't think so I have the equipment for all this it at home. As I have voluntarily presented this idea. Which was accepted with high appreciation. As I got some alligators at home (including me :p) So its easy to make people agree on such kind of things. And I am going to do this BBQ stuff in a very desi way.

Another thing to mention that my mom has cooked Kheer. Which is the specialty of our home. Most of my friends are fan of it. Though I am moderate in sweets. But I love it.

So I hope Eid day will be great. InshAllah.

I want to wish Happy Eid to all of my friends and readers.

COMSATS Institute in promoting Open Source in Pakistan (report by Spider Magazine)

I was reading the November issue of Spider magazine. And I came up with the article "Open Source to the rescue" on page 50. In this article various aspects of promoting open source software in Pakistan has been discussed. Because now a days piracy is a hot topic in Pakistan.

This article attracts my attention when I see the name of my university -COMSATS IIT- there. We were involved in the development of open source projects. We were developing an open source healthcare management system for public sector hospitals of Pakistan. It would be great if the writer at Spider also mention the contribution of each university and their projects being done.

I have wrote a post on this project in detail on Pakzilla.com. A presentation on project tour is also available there.
